SUBJECT: Preakness Celebration Balloon Festival Information

You are cordially invited to participate in the Preakness Celebration Balloon Festival. This year will be bigger and better than ever and will include four events. ALL EVENTS will take place at Turf Valley in Howard County Maryland. The 135th running of the Preakness Stakes is scheduled for that Saturday afternoon at Pimlico Race Course.

This is an invitation only event. We will be accepting the first 20 pilots who register and hold a Commercial Pilot Certificate with a mininum of 100 hours at LTA/PIC.

We will be flying in the Washington DC SFRA (Special Flight Rules Area). Maps and special training will be provided on line shortly and in person following pilot check in.

-- Thursday PM sponsor flight/balloon glow.
-- Friday AM flight.
-- Friday PM flight/balloon glow.
-- Saturday AM flight.

Passenger rides will be booked in advance and at the festival. The fee for a balloon flight of 30-45 minutes will be $200 per person. Payment of the full $200 will be made by the passengers directly to the pilot at flight time. Cash and check are the preferred and suggested methods of payment. If you accept credit cards for payment, you may have an advantage on certain bookings.

The entry fee is $1500.00 for Corporate Balloons

Each pilot will receive:

  1. Pilot Pack valued at over $100.00
  2. Lodging at Turf Valley Resort - for two nights- one room for each registered balloon.
  3. If you need additional rooms, you must call 410-465-1500 to book -rooms are limited.
  4. Dinner for pilot plus 2 crew on Thursday before the flight - VIP tent on launch field
  5. Dinner for pilot plus 2 crew on Friday before the flight
  6. Propane

In addition, Sport Balloon Pilots will receive:

  1. $75.00 show up money
  2. $100.00 to fly envelope banner for each of four events (max $400)if available. We are working to have sponsorship for several balloons but we cannot guarantee an envelope banner assignment. Assignment of envelope banners will be made by the date/time of required application forms are received and by the number of your prior years' participation;
    If balloonmeister determines weather is safe for flight/glow/standup and pilot elects not to participate in a particular task, $100.00 will be deducted from pilot's banner incentive fee.
  3. You may be asked to fly a basket banner if available.

For all pilots:

  • Your application and entry fee (if applicable) should be sent in promptly.
  • We need a picture of your balloon and yourself for media coverage and website. I have your balloon photos. Now I need a photo of the pilot.
  • Interest is high - so do not delay in getting your registration materials returned to us by March 1st.
  • Pilots are required to carry a minimum of $1,000,000.00 comprehensive liability insurance.
  • Named Additional Insured will not be required.
  • No form of advertising on banners may be flown unless provided by Turf Valley..
  • Pilots must attend all briefings and must launch from the designated launch fields or as directed by the Balloonmeister.
  • Turf Valley will make best effort to see that all monies due to pilots will be paid by May 30, 2010.
